First Look - Nuflex Muscle and Joint Care Gels
12 August 2013 | By AngusMcIntoshBack at the last round of the British Downhill Series Angus was given some “Nuflex Muscle and Joint Care” products to cast his eye over and see what he made of it.
Looking after your body is a big deal for me both before and after rides. I suffer from some pretty serious bouts of post ride stiffness so I’m always on the look out for something that will make things a little easier when it comes to returning back to my desk!
I only had a few samples so my testing has been fairly limited but I shall share my thoughts on both the Warming and Cooling gels from Nuflex.
What is it…
Basically these 2 products from Nuflex are warming and cooling gels that you can apply before, during or after sport. It’s got backing and testimonials from some influential cyclists such as 3 time national road champion Sid Barras amongst others and it doesn’t include any ingredients that are currently listed on the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) banned substances list so its good to know that it can be used at an elite level.
Apparently it will "Give your body the edge! Whatever the sport.". Strong claims for what is essentially a muscle rub…
We have had some test sachets of both the warming and cooling versions of the product and I’ve used them both with varying results.
The Warming gel
First up we used the warming gel. I’ve been struggling with an old ankle injury that I picked up many moons ago. This should be perfect proving ground for the warming gel pre-ride to get things loosened up and moving freely.
On first application I didn’t exactly think anything was happening… 3 minutes later that deep heat type dull burn feeling had started to arrive and then I started to feel a bit looser and ready to go. Sadly simply rubbing in a warming muscle gel didn’t prove to be the miracle cure. My ankle still hurts when I ride but it certainly loosened me up.
The Cooling gel
The cooling gel feels like a very similar effect in use but if anything a bit more of an intense feeling than the warming gel. On paper it acts as an anti inflammatory and should relieve tired and sore muscles. It also aids in the removal of lactic acid buildup during exercise.
The cooling gel has a bit more of a potent and long lasting effect than its warming brother but they both smell equally potent.
The Bottom line.
It’s no doubt a pleasant feeling to apply before, during and after exercise but as to if it achieves its claims I shall leave you to be the judge of that one. It smells similar to other muscle rubs.
