cheers! the alfine hub is really good - it is a little heavy at the back, but you don't notice it once you're riding. shifting is pretty smooth, but you do have to ease off when changing under load.
as for the gear range, i've got the 20t sprocket on the back, and i'd say 1st is the equivalent to around 3rd gear on a 27spd. 8th gear is around the mid/high gears on the big chainring.
Nice bike, I like the idea of the Alfine hub and been tempted to look for an alfine equipped bike myself. What is the range of gears like? Similar to an 11-32 cassette?
