Thanks Ryan, I'm pretty well covered at the moment, and am hoping to get started on building the prototype just into the new year!!! Thanks for the offer though :-)
You're on the right lines there! I've designed a whole new bike that would be jump friendly, but have been toying with upgrading this one. I think fitting sus would be costly, but braking and shifters definitely need a rethink to improve my overall control. Can't be too bad though, hit my first proper air in it yesterday!!! Very pleased the jump had a well designed transition on the back side :-D
Cheers! The design is coming on nicely, and I now have some good people from the World of pro mountain biking involved, hopefully helping me evolve the design to the prototype stage in the first half of next year. We should then be able to look at offering bikes for sale before the end of 2012, I hope...
Hey Mahammed, I got it second-hand after finding it purely by luck; I'd spent quite some time trying to find a mountain bike that I could pedal by hand because my knees don't work well anymore. Whilst it is a lot of fun compared to not having a bike, the design is fairly limited in what it allows me to do, especially when compared to an ordinary mountain bike, but it has inspired me to try and design my own adaptive bike, which I hope to have built next year. I paid £400 for it, but to buy a similar bike new (this one is 15 years old!) would cost around £3500!!!
It's getting better each time I ride it! The more used to it I'm getting the more I can get out of it. Last week I rode it down HSD at the Gawton site near Tavistock (Woodland Riders) and just had a blast, but I do have to go carefully over drops as it has no suspension. Hopefully my new design will change that as soon as I get it built...
Hi Uncle, I've been up to Haldon a fair few times now, and later this week am going to for a ride with one of the Rangers to assess some changes they want to make to the Challenge Trail so as to be sure they don't reduce the level of access.
100 outta 10 Man! It looks some contraption!
I was riding in cann woods on the 1st and saw you. You were just setting out from the carpark with your family, and Myself and a few mates rode past. I noticed you pedaling with your hands but i wondered how you steered?
Keep it up, good to see you getting out and giving it some.
Cool! I steer with the crank, whilst pedalling. It takes some getting used to for sure, but it works well when you get the hang of it, but you really have to lean into the turns to stop it flipping over though!!! I'm making some progress with designing my own one, and have a meeting with the design engineer tomorrow, so fingers crossed you may yet see me out down the bottom end of the wood sometime...
Good on ya mate, I remember the MBUK issue and have seen a guy hitting the DH runs at Forest of Dean on a 4 wheeled bike, although it has no pedal/armpedal functionality.
I am sure there are enough budding designers out there willing to give it a go, a trail ready handbike sounds like a challenge - Getting my CAD head on now!!
Thanks! It certainly is fun, until you start hitting stuff at speed, though it's really more about the landings! I shouldn't grumble though, compared to not riding (which is where I've been for the last 13 years) it's amazing, and I've been having a blast these last two weeks :-D
Im sure they would be willing to grant you some sort of permission to get your car down there, lets face it, its bad for there image if they dont. And most big company's will go to huge lengths to stop there image and status becoming known as a discriminatory icon XD
Very! Especially at the moment because I'm having physio on my shoulder to try and relocate my scapula properly (my left shoulder rotates too far forward). It's the uphill that's the killer though. I got to the bottom of this run and had to pedal all the way up, and wound up alongside three guys walking their bikes back up, they were all super impressed by the time we got to the top! Trouble is that it's absolutely knackering and so I can only get one run in. I'm going to ask the Forrestry Commission if I can get my car down the access tracks to get me and my bike back to the top.
That is mental!!! I've seen those bikes but not being riden quite like that, especially love the bit where he gets it up on two wheels! I'm keen to stick with the three wheels because I can keep the width down, but it's early days yet, I've got quite a few ideas...
Yeah, now there's one of my brain scratchers! Getting sus on the rear end isn't going to be too hard, the front end is another matter though. I'm thinking of maybe some kind of pivot around the head of the forks and then a set of suspension forks that come from the crank to the hubs. It's a work in progress anyway..!
Thanks Steve, and everyone, for such a positive reception. Buying this bike has been brilliant, but after just two trail days I've already opened my eyes to some serious limitations. I don't want to exclusively go down the four cross route as that would severely limit where I can ride (though I am VERY up for having a go!), and so am trying to design a bike that will perform almost as well downhill but with the ability to make it's own way back up again too. I'll definitely post the results as they happen...
I bet that is some real fun to ride...
I can't remember which issue it was, but in MBUK last year there was a Quad had bike featured(full sus)which may give you some design Ideas. I will try and find out which issue it was.
All ready been there ta! I defo want a go at the four cross downhill stuff, but I need to make a bike that I can cycle back up the hill on. Definitely fancy a trip to Wales to try that out though :-D
I'm an ex-soldier with leg injuries, and up until last weekend I had not riden a mountain bike since 1998. Now I've been getting out in Cann Woods thanks to this handbike I bought!!! Looking forward to designing and building my own soon I hope...
