Nearly 20years go i paid 300'ish quid for this, and it done me proud considering the abuse it got as i learnt to ride of road, those where the days when you crashed about 3times your self each ride and witnessed the hillarity of roughly the same number of crashes for each of your mates.

I spent about the same on a pair of forks to massively upgrade this 2nd hand bike, and almost broke the bank when the first clipless pedals where available for mountain bikes and we could finally replace our toe straps and trainers.

Giro helmets where new to the sceen and did a free crash replacement scheme for their R&D, and this was blinding as we got through a few brain buckets, but if you were nearing the end of the year and you helmet didnt have a dent, it was quickly rectified with a spare rock, so we could get a replacement within the new range crash hats.

I also think thats a Tioga Pysco 2 tire on the front, who almost dominated the market at the time, all but the Smoke and Dart combo.

Grip shift wat the hell was i doing, i quickly went back to the fautless Thumbies.

Frame also morphed into the Zaska also pictured in my profile, so even though it wasnt a brilliantly spec'ed bike, it did OK for itself, so reasonable kit for the time, and lasted a fair few miles both on the ground and tumbling through the air so have to give it a six

I remeber these, this looks like 91-92 model GT, with the 'U' brakes on the back, that were about as good as melted cheese. The forks had a big long length of Elastomer on the inside, which worked ok, until it got cold and they stopped working. think they supposedly had around 2" of travel. the Pantera was one of the first back then, being GT's cheaper Aluminium frame. and quite strong. Flite saddles are still going today, I've got one someplace.

yeah that sounds about right, Russian sourced i think, but give then their due those two raleigh frames are still in use, and one as a primary machine, complete with Pace RC36 and xtr V's and drive chain, hope hubs, it's crazy light. I'll try and get a pic, i only have partial shoots, i dont think he's going this weekend though.

Yeah I remember DynaTech basically the race divisio of Raleigh, if I remember right they used a CP grade titainium, which was a none alloy, the most basic grade of Ti. Was a fraction lighter than a high grade Cro-Moly Steel. The Dynatech's were also Lugged, rather than welded.

martin_fry replied... on 21 January 2009

takes me back, remember, Dynatech and Claude Butler brands also, to ne fair on of my buddies is still riding a dynatech with much sucess, you could get a Ti frame for aout £600 and its still one of the fastest lightest hard tail bikes i have the misfortune see disapear into the distance up any manner of gradients

your so right especially the ones who's parent spend big money on bikes for them. I had to work hard to get my parents to spend £150 on a second hand mountain bike from my mate, an old British eagle, which I eventually bent riding into a concrete bollard!

Cheers, still riding flites, everything else feels too wide, you are so right the rear brake was worse than useless, and the brake boss position ment you could change to any of the aftermarket replacements like the early V brake, so the frame was flawed. RockShox were always designed for mohab and filled with water. Your right the elastomers would be frozen solid, or bottomed out on the rare sunny day, but all helped to develope skills, these days its all laid on for youngsters, lol...

man that looks grap but its GT so its all good

martin_fry replied... on 21 January 2009

it even has a threaded headset and quill stem, these are out of date design types not manufactures, also has the first generation of grip shift, which was awful, muddy wet hands and early style mechs ment it was really dificult to select gears from the seven speed rear block.

This bike is from way before you were born, so your forgiven. At the time, nearly 20 years ago, it was rare for bikes to have front suspension forks, and V Brakes and SPD's were not even invented, the most popular upgrade was anodised after market components, like the Onza chill pill at the front, i expect onza went bust before you had your first trike.

My first mountain bike 1990'ish, canteliver brakes, a massive 10mm (yes ten) of travel on the RockShox quadra10 front forks
