looks so uncomfy to ride but would be quicker to the pub than walking!
ashley_photog replied... on 1 January 2009
I used to ride stuff like this pretty quickly when I was younger, in fact so did Steve Peat, and he won the NPS on a Hard Tail, not too unlike this one in many respects (though with 2" travel suspension forks)

I have an all original alpina 5.5 which I have owned from new for 13 years.
It still rides like a new bike, and is extremely light. I have yet to find a current bike which is as light.
I have been riding bikes for 47 years, when I was 17 I was riding over 9000 miles a year and have ridden over 270 miles in one day.
I built my first "mountain type" bike in 1965 before the term mountain bike was used. This had a lay back seat pillar (in 1965!!) which was invented by me. plus drum brakes and 1.75" 26"rims off a moped and oversized tyres, plus 24 gears. this was achieved by a twin front changer and two sets of gears on the rear wheel, 4 in a Sturmey Archer hub and 3 on a deraileur changer 2x3x4 = 24 !! None of this was mainstream until many years later... in effect I invented Mountain Biking.
Don't listen to the posers... the Univega 5.5 is a very good classic mountain bike.... my wife has a totally original Univega 5.3 again owned from new.
Neither of these bikes has ever needed anything other than a standard service and neither has ever broken or gone wrong.
Best Regards
Roger

now THAT is a quality old-skool setup. respect brother ;) if it works for you then that's all that matters. (would have given 8/10 but for the upside-down bar ends. yes i know you said it was intentional etc..)
kamikaze kid replied... on 5 September 2007
Thanks, I thought about taking those bar ends off but just never did.Theres still time yet. I think I am gonna need a new rear mech soon aswell.

black runs hahaha err no it would snap (or your wrists would)
ashley_photog replied... on 23 January 2009
It's a steel frame so it would bend not snap

I have recently been to Innerleithen (black trail) and Glentress on this bike. I also have photos to prove it. Its hard on the wrists without suspension of course but I only suffered a rear wheel buckle. And those Avid V-brakes are great stoppers for the money. You really are asshole.

Its my bike and it has lasted for a long time and still rides well. No good for big jumps but can handle red trails and some black trails.
