Mountain biking trails at Kanawha State Forest

Kanawha State Forest, situated fewer than 10 miles from the state capital of Charleston, boasts over 30 miles of diverse trails catering to all ability levels. Trail users of all experience levels can start their excursion on the forest service roads, with gentle grades and wide paths suitable for novice riders.

Those seeking a more challenging experience will want to tackle the Black Bear Mountain Trail, a beloved single-track route beloved for its technical terrain. After working up an appetite on the trails, riders are encouraged to refuel in one of Charleston's many acclaimed restaurants. Charleston offers a variety amenities to relax and restore after an active day exploring Kanawha State Forest's scenic trails.

Ballard Trail

Difficulty: Moderate (1.5 miles)

This trail starts on Middle Ridge Road and ends near the shooting range. A rocky overhang makes this trail a technical challenge for bikers.

Davis Creek Trail

Difficulty: Easy to moderate (2.5 mile)

This fairly level trail begins at the footbridge below the lake and follows Davis Creek to Copperhead Rock below the stables. The trail can also be accessed from the forest office and the pool area.

Pigeon Roost Trail

Difficulty: Moderate (0.75 miles)

This trail ascends Pigeon Roost Hollow up to the West Boundary Road.

Polecat Trail

Difficulty: Moderate (1.5 miles)

This downhill trail splits off Ballard Trail very close to Middle Ridge Road and ends at the road to the Shooting Range.

Black Bear Mountain Bike Trail

Difficulty: Moderate (1 mile)

This is a steep challenging downhill trail from Middle Ridge Road to Pigeon Roost Trail. Look for the right-hand alternative route around the steepest section, “Spectator Falls.”

Mossy Rock Trail

Difficulty: Moderate (0.75 miles)

A moderate trail that goes from the head of Shrewsbury Hollow to Middle Ridge Road.

Pine Ridge Trail to Dunlop Trail

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult (1.5 miles)

This trail begins on the C-26 Gas Well Road and ends in Dunlop Hollow. Bikers watch for signs: #1 Store Trail and the northern portion of Pine Ridge Trail are for hikers only.

Teaberry Rock Trail

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult (1.5 miles)

The trail begins at Middle Ridge Road near gas well c-25 and ends into Davis Creek Trail. The Access trail splits off to Shrewsbury Hollow Road above pool area.

Wildcat Ridge Trail

Difficulty: Moderate to difficult (2 miles)

The trail begins on the west Boundary Ridge Road and runs between Polly and Dunlop Hollows descending into Dunlop Hollow Picnic area.

Getting here

From I-64 in Charleston, take Exit 58A, go south on US 119 a little over a mile, go left on Oakwood Rd. (second stop light), follow the brown and white signs for Kanawha State Forest.
